Tragic Incidents of Children Falling into Drains Raise Concern in Delhi
Civic apathy claims young life: Delhi boy dies after falling into drain covered with cow dung; fifth such death in months

NEW DELHI: An 11-year-old boy died after falling into a drain covered with cow dung in Prem Vihar, in southwest Delhi's Najafgarh, on Sunday. According to police, a PCR call was received around 7.15 pm at Najafgarh police station regarding a child that had fallen into a drain. Upon receiving the information, Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Services (DFS) immediately rushed to the spot. The child was pulled out at the time of the incident and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Local residents claimed that the child was chasing a kite when he fell into the drain. Due to a layer of dry cow dung on the drain, the child could not estimate the depth of the drain and therefore, fell into it, they said, adding that three children were seen chasing the kite near the drain. Last week, a seven-year-old boy fell into a sewer in south Delhi's Rajokri, triggering a day-long search. It was later discovered that he had come out on his own from another opening of the sewer. On July 7, a four-year-old boy had died after falling into an open drain in northwest Delhi's Mahindra Park. The boy was out with his grandmother to see a religious procession and was playing nearby when he fell into the drain. In another incident, a three-year-old boy died after falling into an open drain while playing in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas on March 21. A 13-year-old boy had also died after falling into an open drain in outer Delhi's Nangloi on Nov 8, 2024.
